Well. it's happened. Some of the big box stores are opening ON Thanksgiving night to allow you the "convenience" of starting your holiday shopping rather than eating your Thanksgiving dinner. Ugh.
What is so important a purchase that one is willing to miss spending time with their loved ones? Aren't these purchases for the exact people you are leaving to grab those 'door busters" for? And what about the poor souls who are manning the registers and stocking the shelves? |

Certainly there have been some, shall we say questionable, Firefly Cupcake flavor "ideas" in the two plus years of business. I'd like to think we strive for cutting edge creativity but stay clear of the "what were we thinking realm". The creative sessions with my creative team always contain a fair amount of "OH we should do a (insert crazy idea here) cupcake, followed by a "ya, NO!. Waves of laughter always ensue. But how does one stay fresh and innovative but out of the looney bin? |

So very much has happened since I've "blogged"-some good some bad some weird but all very real. We try as a team to just embrace the unexpected, but some days, it's just not so easy. From the intense stuff-births, deaths and illness to the weird stuff-customer requests for cupcakes with.... ehr, well never mind about that...to the just plain challenging both professionally and personally. How to remain focused and "cupcake ready" and happy throughout it all? |

Cupcakes are a lot of things...decadent, moist, yummy goodness-but healthy? Not so much. Or so I thought :-)
We received a call from Independent Health asking us to be part of an event featuring "healthy food options". (Um sure ok) They were interested in our vegan and gluten free offerings which have become so overwhelmingly popular. Gluten free chocolate was one of the first recipes I developed for my sister in law with celiacs disease. Vegan and dairy free were requested by our customers early on. |

You can plan and prepare and imagine how things will be. But some things you are never really completely prepared for. That's how its been for me. I guess trying to wrap my head around how incredibly blessed I have been. Through all the trips to stores, online ordering and endless searches for everything we use, emerges the most amazing thing. Last week I was joking with Tricia, who is my bakery manager, about buying (and USING) ridiculous amounts of stuff to make thousands of cupcakes each week. We like to think about baking orders a year ago when a 50 pound bag of flour lasted a month. Not any more! Not even close! And as fate would have it, in strolled the weekly delivery. We couldn't stop laughing as he unloaded bag after bag-he probably thought we were crazy-and built a tower in our dining room. We knew we had to grab a photo of it. 'Cuz hey...what'll next year look like?

During last weeks' craziness that was Artwalk and Cinco de Mayo complete with live music, live cupcake art and a packed house, I tasked each team member to think of a cupcake idea inspired by their mom or grandmother. As usual, they didn't disappoint! I loved hearing their memories of their mom and what they wanted in her cupcake.. The most out of the box idea came in the form of grilled cheese as comfort food...I was intrigued to say the least. Interestingly enough, I found a recipe and Tricia and I got to work making it our own. |

It's Monday morning and I can't wrap my head around how phenomenal our opening weekend was. Our expectations were certainly exceeded. I am so proud of our team. They executed my vision to a tee. I wouldn't be able to give you the type of products we serve and the customer service you deserve without them.
We heard great comments on our coffees and teas as well as the cupcakes. We are so glad you enjoyed them. We worked long and hard with Justyna from Kelleran Roastery tasting, training and perfecting the methods of French Press and manual pourover. |
